New Reports on the Safety of Aspartame

The Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) a body of independent European scientific experts that advises the European Commission on matters of food safety has re-affirmed the safety of Aspartame in a report issued on December 10, 2002. The SCF report is the result of exhaustive evaluation of hundreds of articles related to the safety of Aspartame published in the scientific literature since 1988. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the United Kingdom conducted the literature search in 2001, and the new SCF report also incorporates conclusions from a 2002 review by the Expert Committee on Flavouring, Food Additives and Processing Aids, a panel of independent scientific experts under the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA). Aspartame and other high-intensity sweeteners play an import role in achieving healthful, balanced diets because they give consumers greater dietary choice and taste without all the calories of sugar.
