BGCNR_1Parchem is dedicated to inspiring interest in chemistry and promoting scientific awareness within our community.  As a leading science and technology company, Parchem regularly supports opportunities for youth to explore scientific education by offering scholarships to students who excel in science as well as giving kids first-hand opportunities to explore the world of chemistry.

This week, Parchem’s Senior Compliance Officer, Jacob Klein, led over 60 summer campers at the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle (BGCNR) through a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program exercise. Ranging from ages 6 to 18, the kids were led on scientific journey by Jake who introduced them to the chemical industry, shared a few basic chemistry facts behind everyday products, and followed up with a fun hands-on demonstration of chemical reactions and non-Newtonian fluid dynamics.  The kids worked together to make “Oobleck,” a simple mixture of corn starch and water that behaves quite unlike any other liquid in the world.  Once the mixture was complete, the kids had lots of fun discovering how the fluid quickly solidified under pressure, but then seemed to melt immediately when left to sit for a moment.

BGCNR_2Jake’s chemistry project not only fueled the students’ interest in science, but left them intrigued about the chemical industry and all the potential careers in science as well.  “It was a great experience to engage the kids with this kind of science project,” stated Jake after the event.  “It really gives me a sense of pride to work for an organization that values community outreach and puts resources into organizations supporting the sciences.”  Jake is a graduate of Union College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
